Agnes Setalla Nahsonhoya is
of the Bear Clan from Sichomovi Village at Second Mesa. She was
born in the Snow Bird Canyon. She has been making pottery for
the past 20 years.
Agnes said that she learned
to make pottery from her mother (Pauline Setalla), who originally
learned to create beautiful Hopi pottery from her aunt Eunice
Fawn Navasie. Agnes prides herself in making natural colored
pottery.
Some of her favorite designs
include the thunder bird, rain, snow, stars and other symbols
of Hopi. All of Agnes' pottery is done traditionally from start
to finish.
Agnes is recognized as one
of the most outstanding contemporary Hopi potters of today. She
is the daughter of Pauline Setalla and sister to Dee, Gwen and
Stetson. She is a perfectionist who takes her work very seriously.
Her pottery blends contemporary
and traditional designs. Her work often has subtle fire clouds
as opposed to the bright blushes of her brothers.
